Contraception Methods

Contraception is also known as birth control. Contraption is designed to prevent sperm from fertilizing an egg and prevents the ovaries from releasing an egg. Not all methods of contraception works the same for everyone. Your body may react differently to certain methods than others will. To find the best method you need to consult with your doctor or gynecologist. Most forms of birth control can be free or cost little with insurance. The only form of contraception that prevents STDs are condoms.

Intrauterine Device(IUD)

A small flexible piece of plastic or copper that is inserted in the uterus. The IUD prevents the sperm cells from coming into contact with egg. Hormonal IUDs release a hormone that thickens the mucus in the cervix making it difficult for the sperm to bypass and stops the eggs from leaving the uterus. The copper IUD could also be used as a form of emergency contraception,if it is inserted within 5 days of unprotected sex.

Benefits

  • 99% effective

  • Very convenient last up to 12 years

  • You can get pregnant after its removed

  • Can reduce menstrual cramps and make your period lighter

Disadvantages

  • Side effects can last three to six months after insertion

  • spotting or irregular periods

  • Pain after insertion

  • Does not protect

Birth Control Implant(Nexplanon)

Is a small thin rod that is inserted into the arm. The implant releases the hormone called progestin to prevent pregnancy. Just like the hormonal IUD progestin thickens the mucus in the cervix to prevent the sperm swimming to the eggs and stop the eggs from leaving the ovaries. The implant is inserted by a doctor or nurse and can last for 5 years.

  • 99% effective

  • Very convenient last up to 5 years

  • You can get pregnant after its removed

  • Can reduce menstrual cramps and make your period lighter

  • 1 in 3 women completely stop having periods after a year

  • Estrogen free only contain progestin

Disadvantages

  • Spotting or irregular periods

  • Very convenient last up to 5 years

  • Weight gain,nausea,ovarian cyst,breast pain,and bruising where the implant was inserted

  • Do not protect against STDs

Combination Pills(COCs)

There are two different types of birth control pills. One contains both estrogen and progestin and the other contains just progestin. This form of contraception requires you to take one pill everyday around the same time. If you want to skip your period you do not take the hormone free "reminder pills".

Depo-Provera(Birth Control Shot)

An injection that you get every three months that contains the hormone progestin.

Benefits

  • Half the women using the shot stop having their periods after a year

  • Can help prevent cancer in the uterus and  ectopic pregnancy

  • Can get pregnant as soon as  the last injection wears off

Disadvantages

  • Can take up to 10 months after your last injection to get pregnant

  • Have to get the shot every three months for it to be effective

Barrier Methods

Condom

condoms are thin pouches made of latex,plastic,or lambskin that men wear on their penis during sex. Condoms provide protection from STDs and pregnancy. Condoms prevent sperm from entering the vagina. Condoms also prevent STDs because it limits skin to skin contact and prevent bodily fluids that can carry infections from coming int contact with the penis or vagina. Lambskin condoms do not prevent STDs only latex and plastic condoms prevent STDs

Internal Condom(Female Condom)

Female condoms are an alternative to the condom. They provide the same amount of protection from STDs and pregnancy as condoms do. The only difference is this condom is inserted into the vagina or anus. This condom adds a barrier inside the vagina that prevents sperm from reaching an egg.

  • Effective against STDs

  • latex free

  • Condoms make other forms of birth control more effective

  • Have to use one every time you have sex

  • May be uncomfortable at first

Emergency Contraception(EC)

A type of birth control used to prevent pregnancy after sex. EC can be used up to five days after unprotected sex. EC temporarily stops your ovaries from releasing an egg. EC is not as effective as birth control used before or during unprotected sex. EC is most likely not to work if you are already ovulating.

Emergency Contraceptive Pill(Morning After Pill)

The pill can be taken within five days of having unprotected sex. There are two different forms of the pill. One pill contains levonorgestrel and can be bought over the counter without a prescription. The other form contains ulipristal acetate and you need a prescription from a doctor.

  • Latex free

  • Condoms make other forms of birth control more effective

Disadvantages

  • Can be costly

  • Will most likely not work if your are already ovulating

  • Loses its effectiveness the longer you wait
